When it comes to witchcraft, most of us think of Harry Potter, the Salem Witch Trials or caricatures like the Wicked Witch of the West. But did you know that witchcraft is actually considered a religion? Witchcraft is now known as Wicca and the followers of the faith are referred to as Wiccans. Contrary to popular belief, Wiccans do not worship Satan or pagan gods. It’s been said that Wicca is a religion of poetry instead of theology. Instead of attending a church every Sunday, Wiccans conduct their own rituals and ceremonies at a place and time of their choosing. In Wicca, there is now only one God and one Goddess. The God and Goddess can be described as husband and wife or brother and sister, depending on how the Wiccans choose to worship them. The God is the provider of food and the bringer of death. As for the Goddess, she is sometimes referred to as the Great Mother or Mother Nature. She is considered to be the source of magical power. However, not every Wiccan worships the God or Goddess. Others choose to deem nature as their deity. When it comes to Wicca, there is a great deal of spiritual freedom involved.

Though Wicca is a very flexible religion, there are two main rules. The first rule, the Wiccan Rede, states: “An it harm none, do what thou wilt”, which basically means do whatever you want as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. The second rule is called “The Rule of Three” and it reinforces the first rule by ensuring that any harm or good that a Wiccan does will come back three times over. By practicing these laws, Wiccans can enjoy a sense of freedom and safety in following their faith.

How does Wicca differ from other religions? For one thing, women are considered just as important as men, if not more so. After all, the Goddess is considered the driving force behind the faith. Also, human sexuality is thought to be a gift from the Goddess or Great Mother. The Goddess, along with many other aspects, is viewed as the goddess of fertility. So it’s only natural that the Goddess would bestow sexuality on the Wiccans. Last but not least, the environment ranks highly on the faith’s list of priorities. It’s common to find Wiccans maintaining “green” habits, such as recycling or using green products.

Wicca is certainly a fascinating religion and if anyone were to convert, they would enjoy a great sense of spiritual freedom as well as a sense of sisterhood.

What are the Burning Times? If you’ve heard of the Salem witch trials, you already have an idea of what the term means. Unfortunately in the past, many people gave in to the mob mentality that witchcraft was evil. Out of fear, they accused many innocent men and women who was clearly not a witch and sent them to their deaths. The fear spread to hysteria and made its way over Europe and in doing so, countless innocent lives were lost at the stake or gallows.

The frenzy spread to mostly Switzerland, Germany and France and most of the deaths were usually during a time of great political chaos. Though many believe the death toll to be around nine million, the total most likely is between 50,000 and 100,000. Though many supposed witches were hanged or burned alive from the 14th to the 18th century, most were killed from 1550 to 1650. And nearly all of the victims were tried by local, community courts instead of the Church. Also, a surprising amount of the victims were male, amounting to 25%.

Nearly all of the victims had things in common though that led to their ill-fated death. Many of them were midwives, native healers, single women who lived alone and/or owned property, people against whom neighbors had a grudge, practitioners of pagan rituals, people who were accused by other victims under torture and people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Since then, the witch hunts have thankfully died down. Wiccans can now lead a life free from persecution, at least not to the extreme extent. Of course, Wiccans do still need to be careful. The Wicca faith is still a minority and is generally met with scorn and bewilderment. There is still a danger of being physically attacked simply for being Wiccan. For this reason, it is a little more difficult than most to find a Wiccan group. For obvious reasons, they don’t advertise in the Yellow Pages. The best way to find a Wicca group is go to the local earth festival and introduce yourself. From there, you can find safety in numbers and feel free to practice your faith without fear of retribution.

Charge a Candle for Magick

A lot of people have heard of charging their candles for magick, but some people still don’t know how. This will give you a brief overview of how to charge your candle and hopefully give you some information as to why it is so important when using candles to do this. This can make your magick more potent and more effective. This is so simple and easy to do, once you see your magick working even more effectively with the use of charged candles then you will realize the importance of charging your spell.

The only thing you need is the candle that you are going to use with the magick runes, or symbols already inscribed into the candle, the candle holder and that is all. You can have a match and lighter on hand if you plan to let the spell or magickal working be the candle with the runes which is such a simple way yet powerful way to do magick.

What you will need to do is place the candle in your power hand. Your power hand is the one that you write with. Place your opposite hand upward toward the sky. Visualize your goal, at the end of this working what is it that you want to have accomplished? Visualize and imagine the hand being filled the energy of the God/dess. Now see the universal mother energy combining with your intention. With this combined energy flowing through you and filling your whole body, push this energy into your spell candle.  You are the conductor and have control of this energy given to you by the God/dess. Push the energy into the candle, you may also speak aloud your intention.

You can place the candle into the holder and light it if you are doing  a candle magick working. Or you may proceed now with the full magickal working or spell casting. For me it seems to work best if I do my cleansing ritual, layout my tools, and then charge my candle before doing the whole spell. It may take some time, and some people tend to think that certain spells shouldn’t be as lengthy but for me my magick is almost guaranteed to work when I follow these procedures. This is not to say you must do this this this and this to receive a certain result, but it can make you magick more effective. Lengthy spells for me have always worked well and I must say that during this time I feel and intense connection with the God/dess which of course plays a deep part.
