It annoys me how crazy and inaccurate some of this propaganda is, and it continues to spread. Origin of Halloween
Halloween is a version of the ancient Celtic holiday called Samhain. It was an pagan fire festival. It was an ancient practice to signify the close of the harvest and the initiation of the winter season. It is sometimes called the festival of the dead because the ancient Celts believe that during Halloween the veil between the worlds (living and dead) are the thinnest. This is not a bad thing. Origin of Halloween : The Fairies
The ancient Celts believed in faeries that were sometimes hostile to man kind. These fairies would sometime trick humans to become lost in the fairy mounds, lost forever. Christians altered expanded on fairies by calling them demons, (the Celts neither believed in demons, or angels, heaven or hell) and saying that they are of Lucifer.
The Celts would play practical jokes and give into mischief during this night. This was to liven the spirits of the people before the harsh realities of upcoming winter. People would go to houses in the community and demand treats, if the people didn’t supply the treats then they were targets for tricks or practical jokes.
Origin of Halloween: The Pagans
The origin of Halloween is full of interesting information about how the Celts lived and honored the land. Samhain was also a religious day for the ancient Celts. Viewing the Celts as pagans, they were very closely related to the earth. They respected the earth and its yearly cycles and seasons. It was a great celebration to admire the wonders of the earth, ancient and important ancestors and the harvest.
Little is known about the rituals and rites of the fire festival. Most of the details have been lost to time. Divination were particular significant. Divination on things like marriage, children, for the upcoming year. Ducking for apples is a marriage divination. The first person to successful bite into an apple was said to be the first one to marry. In Scotland people would put stones in the hearth before retiring in the night. If the stone was disturbed then it was said the person would die in the during the next year.
