Just Wicca

When it comes to the challenges that life throws our way, every religion has one. Christianity and Catholicism are accused of being too closed-minded and hypocritical. Muslims are looked at with fear of terrorism. Simply put, there are prejudices against everyone. However, there are different challenges, like the challenges that Wiccans face when trying to practice their religion.

For example, if a Wiccan wants to carry around an athame for religious purposes, they may have to apply for a license to carry and conceal a weapon. And forget about carrying the athame to school! You would have to fight the school and most likely the courts as well when it comes to letting your Wiccan child bring a religious knife to school.

Another example of challenges that Wiccans face is finding a place to worship as a large group. Of course they can worship in the privacy of their own homes but what if their coven does not possess a home large enough to practice? Are they forced to rent out a community space and spend costly money for a meeting each time? Most covens figure out a way around that by finding a place in nature that will hold space large enough for them to convene. On the other hand, they still have to plan outings around the weather. If it is raining or storming, they might as well reschedule. Other religions don’t face that problem; other religions have churches to assemble in.

Not only do they have space but they also have community resources and resources from the church treasury if a member of the congregation falls gravely ill or if a family loses their house due to a fire. Most Wicca covens don’t have that resource. If a member of their coven is struck by calamity, most of what they can do is just pray for things to get better and to help out their fellow Wiccan in small ways.

While some claim that Wicca is the fastest-growing religion in the country, it is still behind when it comes to resources focused on helping the members of the faith. It will need to grow and gain civil and community resources in order to truly be a member of the majority. Somehow, I don’t think that they will have any trouble achieving this particular goal. After all, Wicca seems to be a determined and peaceful religion and their troubles could greatly decrease in the future.
